Being alive is pretty tough right now.
Rent prices are skyrocketing everywhere. Gas is $6 a gallon. We’re at war, I guess? Everyone is angry, everyone is sad, everyone is having just a really, really hard time.
It’s easy to get swept into anger or fear or misery when it feels like we’re trudging towards an extinction event brought on by the hubris of our own species. It’s very easy to feel hopeless. I’m not immune to it. I’ve had quite a few breakdowns. I, too, feel like I’m right on the brink of another one pretty much always.
When the rottenness of the world starts to get to me, I play a game with myself. I go out of my way to be as generous as possible to anyone that I might see that day. I’m going to make the grocery cashier feel seen. I’m going to make the person I’m emailing feel heard. I’m going to try and give a little moment of peace to someone else who might be struggling the way that I am.
